Countdown Jetpack
Project:
Countdown Jetpack
Course:
ME 116: Formgiving
Assignment: Design and build your fetish. This should result in an object of intense personality and deep revelation. Express yourself completely through this object, leave no detail unexamined.
Approach: For this project I decided to build a "countdown projector jetpack." As sporting events tick down to the last play, as a race comes down to the home stretch, as you work to finish a final exam, or as you work late into the night on a fast approaching deadline, for me there is a certain rush in testing your maximum personal capabilities under the pressure of time. I think these conditions bring out the best in me. That rush inspired me to build the jetpack.

Construction: I spent a lot of time in the shop and at the scrap yard looking for pieces that had the right patina rust marks to give the piece a weathered look.
Product: In the end, while it worked, the product wasn't very practical. It was heavy, lacked adequate ventilation and needed to be plugged in the whole time. Nonetheless, I felt the final product was quite authentic looking and successful.
