ME 116: Formgiving
Assignment: Design a lamp. Be specific about the area or place you are illuminating. Then use the most appropriate form to bring the lamp to life.
Approach: I wanted to create a lamp that provided mild ambiance lighting, perhaps for a bar or lounge space. I wanted the form of the lamp to mimic draping fabric.
Prototyping: After coming up with initial concept for the lamp, I investigated materials and bulbs that would produce a soft, diffuse light. First I tried LEDS for lighting and various types of plastic and paper to diffuse the light. In the end, I achieved the desired effect with a combination of Christmas lights and tissue paper.
Product: Once I developed the form of the lamp, my goal was to make the lamp as big as possible before the deadline. I created an assembly line system for myself of gluing and drying the individual squares together. In the end, I managed a lamp that was roughly 4' by 6'. The lamp draped beautifully, but I would have liked to make the lamp even bigger! Close up detail...
